![]() ![]() You pointed out the one aspect of Maslow's hierarchy which is the most bullshit in my opinion. Is Creation the highest level of motivation that games can hope to reach? Is there something beyond that level I don’t see? Is this all a load of : "An important aspect of Maslow's hierarchy is that the individual will not not (cannot?) focus on the higher until the lower are met." The ultimate example right now of this is Second Life. Very few games at this point can pull this off well, simply because of the amount of freedom it gives the players. The holy grail of the creation layer for games is a world that self-perpetuates and where gamers actively create and change the world around them. ![]() And other games like Little Big Planet, Neverwinter Nights, or Garry’s Mod provide the tools for players to make their own levels, mods, or pseudo games. Players in Eve represent the largest force for making stories and moving things forward within the game universe. It’s baked into the very premise of games like SimCity, Spore, and Civilization where every decision you make influences the world you’re actively building. There are many different ways to approach the creation level. When players also become the storytellers and world builders for a game, then they can become truly invested in that game. CreateĬreation represents the present peak and near future of gaming. They give players a way to compare and compete indirectly achievements can define a player’s relative social and progressional position within the game world. Rewards take achievements a step further with vanity improvements, such as titles, skins, and sometimes items.Īs socialization has become the norm in modern games, achievements are also a fairly common layer built on top of the social tools. While even single player games can track achievements, the social aspect of sharing and comparing achievements is where they truly shine. Achievements in present games measure a great deal more: progress through various aspects of a game (single player, multiplayer, exploration, etc.), prowess at playing the game, and also completely arbitrary objectives (finding rare objects, performing unexpected actions, etc.). In early games, this was as simple as having a high score list for a game. I would argue that rewards and achievements are not possible without some layer of socialization built in. In MMO games, the persistent, always-connected worlds mean that players can group at any time to accomplish any kind of objective together. Social tools can take many forms: from things as simple as in-game friends lists and chat to team-based multiplayer with objectives, multiplayer deathmatch, cooperative campaign play, raiding, PvP, and much more. Early examples include MajorMUD, Doom, and CivNet while more recent examples include World of Warcraft, the Call of Duty franchise, and Starcraft II. ![]() Nowadays, it’s almost expected that the majority of games will have some kind of social features - whether that’s multiplayer, co-op, or straight MMO. Early MUDs set the standard that some games could not exist as a single player entity, which set the stage for MMORPGs. While many early video games allowed for multiple players (Pong), the Internet opened up opportunities for play across local area networks and vast distances. SocializeĪs games entered the networked era and the Internet became more prevalent, socialization was an obvious next step. Think of games like Legend of Zelda, Super Metroid, and Final Fantasy. Things change in the game world as the story unfolds. Once players grasp the basics of navigating a game world, can they progress, find better gear, and follow a story line? As they revisit earlier parts of the game, enemies that were once hard are now easy. ProgressĪs games advanced, they’ve become more in-depth. Examples include Pac-Man, early Mario games, Rogue, or Tetris. There was little to no story, and the challenge (and fun) of the game was solely built around besting the harder and harder challenges set in front of you. Can you survive? Can you make it to the next level? The challenge of early games lay in grasping the rules and surviving despite the odds. ![]()

Jeremy Brown is English teacher at an adult education centre where a motley group of foreign students - hot blooded Italian Giovanni Capello, grumpy German au-pair Anna Schmidt, constantly laughing Spaniard Juan Cervantes, French beauty Danielle Favre, bad tempered Sikh Ranjeet Singh, inept Pakistani Ali Nadim, smarmy Greek Maximillian Papandrious, Japanese electronics executive Tarō Nagazumi, Chairman Mao quoting Chung Su-Lee and head bobbing Indian Jameela Ranjhat - all attend to master the ways of the English language. Predictably, much of the humour arises from the students' inability to master the language and, unfortunately, this had led to the show being branded as racist. This LWT sitcom from 1977 featured Barry Evans, fresh from 'Doctor At Large', as Jeremy Brown, an English teacher who tries to teach foreign students the English language. 'Mind Your Language' was yet another offering from sitcom veteran Vince Powell. Watch the first season and act like that's all there was. By this point the stories had become painfully unfunny and the show was a chore to watch. They eventually explain that the man went back to his country but the female's disappearance is completely ignored. About half way through the third series, I couldn't take it any more and had to stop watching. The writers quickly realized they were terrible characters and rarely gave them any lines. Another hot girl to create friction(ugh) and a guy who never learns any English at all. They also added two completely unnecessary characters. They were clearly out of funny ideas so all but one episode had them going outside(something that never happened in the first series). The writing got dramatically worse in the second series. About half way through the second series, I was getting disappointed. I didn't even mind that there was virtually no continuity and that a group of people who can barely speak English constantly use British slang. If he - an Asian actor - did not find the show offensive, why on Earth should anyone else? Superbly parodied by L.W.T.'s 'End Of Part One' as 'Mind Your Foreigners'.Ībout half way through the first series, I thought this was one of the funniest TV shows ever. Michael Grade axed the show despite its popularity, yet in 1986 it returned as an independent production, courtesy of one of its stars - Albert Moses. My main bugbear is that the characters never developed from one episode to the next it would have been nice to have seen say, the students gradually mastering English, coming to understand each other's customs, maybe even getting married ( Danielle and Giovanni would have made a nice couple ). This was never intended to be serious social commentary. The students themselves came across as altogether likable. Besides, the English characters were also stereotypes. Manuel could easily have been one of Jeremy Brown's students. Yes, the students were stereotypes, but British comedy has always been full of them - check out 'Fawlty Towers' for yet more 'funny foreigners'. The main source of ridicule in this show is the English language itself. I personally think it is no more offensive than those American movies that depict the British either as plummy-voiced toffs or chirpy Cockney sparrows. ![]() 'Mind Your Language' is often cited as an example of 'racist' '70's British comedy. Also around were Mary Whitehouse lookalike Zara Nutley as the fearsome principal 'Miss Courtney', Tommy Godfrey ( 'Arthur' in Powell's 'Love Thy Neighbour' ) as 'Sid' the caretaker, and Iris Sadler as tea lady 'Gladys'. The show provided a welcome return for the popular actor, who had been off British television screens since 'Doctor At Large' in 1971. ![]() Presiding over this microcosm of international relations was well-meaning but naive English teacher Jeremy Brown, played by the late Barry Evans.
